When Quaid looked up, Drake was already halfway across the bridge. He hurried to catch up. When the two were side-by-side, Drake nodded, indicating the distance was acceptable for shooting at the Rondovins. He gestured to the right, while Quaid nodded in agreement.

They balanced themselves and then blasted away. Then they counted the Rondovins as they dropped to the ground. Hurrying, they crossed the remaining length of bridge.

“All accounted for.” Quaid rolled one of the Rondovins over with his boot. “I’ll get, Zaira. Be ready for any further trouble.”

He turned to cross the bridge and his heart nearly stopped. Zaira was attempting to cross it on her own, but she gripped the rope railing with such a tight hold, he knew she was still having difficulty. He slung his weapon over his shoulder and shouted, “Hold on, Zaira! I’m coming to get you.”

He hurried across the bridge, trying in vain not to swing it too much as Zaira sank to her knees. When he finally reached her, he hoisted her over his shoulder again, then made the trek back across the bridge.

“What’s wrong with her?” Drake helped ease her off his shoulder.

“She won’t tell me.” He stared at her closed eyes. She was sound asleep. “Come on. Let’s get back to the way station and return her to her father.”

“When did she begin to show symptoms like this?” Drake kept his weapon at the ready while Quaid cradled Zaira in his arms.

“She’s got more energy than most men I know,” Quaid said. “Then we became separated during an encounter with the Rondovins. When I found her again, she was lethargic, just like she is now. She said she was hungry. I fed her, and she seemed to perk up a bit, but then grew weak again. I don’t know what’s wrong with her. I could tell Martius knew something, but he wasn’t saying.”

“Martius mentioned to me you’re going to be the new Minister of Defense. Guess that goes along with the marriage to Zaira.”

“No,” Quaid said, shifting Zaira’s weight a bit in his arms. “She told me the High Council had already decided to offer me the job. It was her idea to choose me as her mate. Her father knows nothing about it. Apparently, the Chief Magistrate had intended to make her his wife instead, with her father’s blessing.”

“Caryndian Bach?” Drake’s eyes grew wide. “I wouldn’t want to be in your shoes. Powerful man, powerful friends. Otherworlders have known to just vanish off this planet when they have conflicts with him.”

“Martius likes me.”

Drake laughed out loud. “So you’re finally adjusting to the notion of being married, eh?”

Quaid studied Zaira’s angel-like features as she slept comfortably in his arms. “I could do much worse.” Quaid held her closer to his chest. “Much worse.” Fact of the matter was he didn’t want to think of life without her any longer. Before he could make it right with her, he had to speak with her father.

“I’ll say.” Drake studied Zaira’s low-cut bodice. Quaid glanced at him.
